Beyond the PhD: Post-Doctoral Opportunities and Early Career Development for Neo-Latinists

The Society for Neo-Latin Studies is organising a FREE EVENT aimed at researchers with interests in Neo-Latin at the postdoctoral and early-career level, to be held on the 9th September 2016 at King’s College London (Strand Campus). A full schedule for the event is given below, and will include a sponsored lunch and coffee breaks. Each session will include brief presentations on the schemes and opportunities under discussion, with particular consideration of the perspective of neo-Latin researchers. All presenters will have personal experience either of successful applications for, or of assessment of applications for the schemes or positions under discussion.

The event is open to all who are interested, but should it be over-subscribed, priority will be given to those working wholly or partly on or with neo-Latin material, and who are either PhD students in the final 18 months of their program or post-doctoral researchers within three years of completing their PhD.

Program

10am – Arrival

10.30-11.30 – Introduction and presentation of Junior Research Fellowships and European opportunities. (Victoria Moul and William Barton)

11.30-12.00 – Coffee

12.00-1.00 – Presentation of Leverhulme and British Academy post-docs; and of post-docs attached to specific projects. (Lucy Jackson, Elizabeth Sandis and David McOmish)

1.00-2.00 – Lunch

2.-3.00 - Teaching fellowships, temporary and permanent lectureships, and careers in school-teaching.  (Bobby Xinyue, Ingrid De Smet, John Roberts)

3.00-3.30 – Tea

3.30-5.00pm - Strategies for career development: balancing teaching and research; where and when to publish; REF/TEF; preparing a book proposal; other career options etc. (Victoria Moul, William Barton, Gesine Manuwald)

5.00 onwards - Drinks/dinner at a local venue on a voluntary basis

Society for Neo-Latin Studies: Postgraduate Student Event

This year's postgraduate event will be held at Merton College, Oxford.
20 places available, first come first served.

There will be no fee involved, please just bring £3.30 in cash with you for a massive lunch. Free tea, coffee, and biscuits.

There are opportunities to present short papers (10-15 minutes) at this event, in a friendly and relaxed environment. If you would like to speak about your research or suggest a topic for discussion, please email elizabeth.sandis@merton.ox.ac.uk by Monday 22 February.
There is no deadline for registering to attend.

Programme:

11.15-11.30 Meet outside the main entrance to Merton College on Merton Street (postcode OX1 4JD). The College is 2 mins from High Street/Queen's Lane (where the London bus stop is) and a 20-25 min walk from the railway station.

11.30 Welcome and Introduction (Prof Gesine Manuwald and Dr Elizabeth Sandis)
Tea and biscuits and short papers (10-15 minutes each)

12.15 Lunch in Merton's famous dining hall (£3.30, paid in cash on the day): soup, main course, salad bar, dessert, fruit (self-service).

2-3.30 Meet Dr Julia Walworth, Fellow Librarian of Merton College. Special exhibition of Latin manuscripts to peruse (chosen by Dr Walworth and Dr Sandis) and a tour of the famous Old Library (about which you can read more here: http://www.merton.ox.ac.uk/library-and-archives/history).

Opportunity to stay in the college afterwards (for a cup of tea or a walk round the lovely gardens - for recent photos see the gardening team's page: https://www.facebook.com/MertonGardens/timeline)
Accommodation (inexpensive college room on main site) may be available. Email me as soon as possible if you would like me to book this for you. It may be a useful extension to your trip if, for example, there are things you would like to see in the Bodleian or the college libraries while you are here.
